There’s a saying: Kids are like sponges.
They absorb everything they see and hear, regardless if it’s positive or negative.
And depending on what the information is, that may or may not affect them into adulthood.
For example,
I was listening to a conversation about Fred Rogers, also known as the creator of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.
In my opinion, it was one of the best childrens’ television series to ever exist because that show planted a lot of important seeds in the minds of its young viewers.
Some of them being:
“I didn’t have to be like all the others. No, I found out I was okay….okay just the way I was…”
“You can wish, hope, or contemplate a thing you’d like to do. But until you start to do it you will never see it through because the make-believe pretending just won’t do it for you.”
“Some people think that friends are always happy, always having fun. Well, that’s not true. Friends often have hard times and sad times. But friends can come together again and again, and build a stronger and stronger friendship between each other.”
“You see everybody’s different, and everybody’s valuable. The world can be a better place because you were born into it.”
“It’s not so much what we have in this life that matters. It’s what we do with what we have.”
And when children hear these things, it tends to stick to them for a very long time.
Similarly, the same thing happens when they hear negative things. It’ll also have the same effect except, you know…not in a good way.
When that happens, they tend to live their lives with assumed constraints, or in more familiar terms, limiting beliefs.
Joseph Sugarman talks about this in chapter nine of his book, The Adweek Copywriting Handbook and how it can affect how you do in business.
Sugarman experienced a few limiting beliefs himself but later found out they can be broken. For example, he sold sunglasses through mailing ads. Think about that for a second. Even though they weren’t able to try the sunglasses on, he managed to get people to buy sunglasses.
And he was able to do it by using the same copywriting skills and knowledge you can learn by reading his book.
