When You Assume, It Just Makes an A55 Out of You

A few days ago, I was helping a friend of mine with a business case study.

Yes, those infamous case studies that just make your brain hurt.

Except I wasn’t helping him solve it, I was proctoring the case.

This was one of the more straightforward cases compared to the ones we’ve done together in the past. The ones we normally tackle are somewhat misleading.

Anyways, this was how it went down.

I read the prompt to him.

He asks me questions based on the information provided.

If he asks the right questions, he uncovers more information that’ll get him closer to solving the case.

But there were many times where he went off track, simply because he made one big mistake.

One mistake that you should never make in business. Thankfully, I learned this early on from one of my professional mentors.

That mistake is:

Making assumptions.

You know the saying, “When you assume, it makes an ass out of you and me.”

That’s not entirely true, it just makes an ass out of you.

If you make assumptions out of your market, then your entire copy is going to get thrown off. This is why your market research is very important. Although, there are some assumptions you can safely make.

But for the most part, you gotta do the research and set your marketing foundation.

That’s where one of my chapters in How to Become an Email Titan comes in handy,

“How to Know Your Market Better Than They Know Themselves.”

It shows you three different methods you can use to gain enough information about your market so you can write weeks, maybe even months worth of email content.
