Here’s a funny moment that randomly came to mind.
I remember when I was on my way home one day, walking to the subway station.
All of a sudden, a young blonde woman approached me and asked,
“Hey, quick question. How old are you?”
You see, in New York City, sometimes you’ll come across non-profit canvassers. If you don’t know what they are, they’re people who try to get random people on the street to make donations to their non-profit’s cause.
I’m not sure if they’re still out there nowadays. I haven’t seen any of them around except for church missionaries.
But that’s what this young woman was, and apparently, you have to be a certain age or over in order to donate money.
So when she asked for my age, I instantly knew what she wanted from me.
Of course, I answered.
But what came out of my mouth was probably the stupidest thing I’ve ever said in my life so far.
I blurted out (In my deep voice, mind you) with a straight face,
“….Twelve.”
Why? I don’t know.
I mean, I didn’t say it on purpose, and I would’ve told the truth. But I was tired from being out all day. My brain wasn’t paying attention. I was in my own world. And the last thing I wanted to do was to talk to a stranger.
Anyways, after I gave my answer, I stood there looking at her, acting like I said nothing wrong, waiting for her response.
But all she could do was look at me back, probably processing what the hell I just said with no clue how to respond.
The only comment she managed put out was,
“Uhh….oh.…kay…”
And then walked away.
I didn’t fully realize what I said until a good few seconds later. That’s when I tried to hold in my laughter so people wouldn’t think I’m mentally off.
Is there any lesson to take away from this encounter? Probably, if you look hard enough.
But consider this a Friday night entertainment email.
I might make that a regular weekly thing, it’s been on my mind for a while. I think it’d be fun to do.
But only time will tell if, or when, I’ll actually do it.
