What I Learned From Writing Cold Emails

A couple of days ago, I talked about how I helped a business owner write a series of cold emails to help generate leads for a new service he was providing for real estate brokers.

Now I usually don’t write cold emails, for other people nor for myself.

But I thought this might be a good learning experience for myself. Plus it’s not like the person I’m working with was paying me. We established a profit-sharing deal instead, so we both had to make sure the emails were good quality otherwise we both weren’t going to get paid.

After writing 14 or so emails, here are a couple of things I learned:

Respect the reader’s time

The person you’re emailing is probably just as busy, if not even more busy than you are. Plus they didn’t even ask to hear from you. So it’s best to keep the emails short and direct.

What’s in it for them?

When someone is being cold emailed, they know that you’re trying to sell them something. In that case, the best thing to do is let them know what they’re going to get out of this and not feel like a random stranger’s asking them for money.

Share different features of your product or service

When we were working on our follow-up emails, we decided it’d be a better idea to share different aspects of the service we’re promoting rather than saying the same thing in different ways.

That way, the readers get a better picture of what they’re being offered.

Plus it won’t look like spam.

Stay organized

Since we planned on reaching out to a lot of people, we created a system to track the people we emailed, how many times we emailed them, when we emailed them, if they responded, etc.

This makes our lives a lot easier and a lot less stressful.

There they are, four different things I learned from cold emailing.

In fact, some of these lessons don’t just apply to cold emailing, they also apply when you send emails to people on your email list too.
