Showing Some Love For Unofficial Holidays

It’s Labor Day, also known as the unofficial end of summer.

We’re seeing Labor Day sales everywhere and the worst thing a kid can see, Back to School sale commercials.

But while everyone else is focused on Labor Day, I spent some time looking at the unofficial holiday calendar.

And apparently, today is National Read a Book Day.

It feels like people aren’t reading much nowadays, and they’re only doing it when they have to.

Other than that, most of the time, we’re always on the move physically and mentally, constantly worrying about so many different aspects of our lives.

But reading, even if it’s just for 20 minutes, can help relieve that stress and can provide other benefits like:

1. Mental stimulation, including improving memory and concentration

2. Free or inexpensive education, and even less expensive with the existence of e-books

3. Entertainment

As Sam, from Nickelodeon’s show, iCarly, once said, “They’re like TV in your head.”

I actually used to hate reading, but that’s only because I was either forced to read, or I was forced to read a book I didn’t enjoy.

But it’s a whole different story when I find that perfect book. And when I do, I could stay up and sacrifice an entire night of sleep reading it if I wanted to.

So the message of the day: Read a book sometime, fiction or nonfiction, it doesn’t matter.
