Whenever I work with new copywriting clients, especially if they’re in a market that I’m unfamiliar with, one of the first things market research methods I use is interviewing that client.
When I ask them questions, I always tell them to answer in great detail while we’re in a recorded call.
And although the call would turn out to be at least 40 minutes, which is a lot of audio content for me to look over, it gives me a lot of information to use to write quality sales emails. Sometimes I’d be able to write about their product or service from an angle that I never would’ve thought of if it weren’t’ for some of the small details mentioned throughout the call.
Although I will admit, there are some downsides from doing high-detailed interviews. There’s going to be a lot of information that may not be useful so you have to do a lot of re-listening and info digging. But the hidden details you do manage to find may sometimes be the most valuable pieces of information you can use.
That’s why I love listening to the interviews that Michael Senoff conducts with all the great business and marketing experts. He does an amazing job of picking the experts’ brains and getting them to share every ounce of knowledge and wisdom they possess.
