Do You Write Boring?

You know what really grinds my gears?

Scholarly articles
Corporate emails and
College textbooks.

What do they all have in common? They’re all boring to read! Why are they boring to read? You probably already know the answer by now. But if you don’t, it’s because they’re not written in a conversational tone. By the way, props to you if you read a college textbook from cover to cover. You must have a god-like attention span.

It sucks that we were taught to write formally throughout all those years in school. But once we get into the real world, it’s nothing like that! And some people don’t catch on to the fact that formal writing isn’t the way to go.

Then that mentality carries over in business. And when they’re writing emails, blog posts, website copy, or anything else that involves writing, they don’t see the results they were expecting.

So if you haven’t been doing so already, start writing the way you talk. Here are some reasons why it’s the better way to write….

1. It’s easier to write. You can simply have a conversation with yourself and write down everything you say. That way, you write faster and you overcome writer’s block.
2. It’s more fun. Not only is it more fun to write, but it’s more fun for your subscribers to read.
3. Throw the rules of grammar into a pit of lava. “You can’t begin a sentence with the word ‘and’,” nagged my high school English teacher. Well I just did in this email…three times! So take that, Ms. Simmons!
4. More readership. After all, that’s the ultimate goal. Especially when you’re writing a sales email or letter.
