But Wait…That’s Racist!

No it’s not.

Let me explain what I’m talking about.

I started volunteering at an animal shelter and have been going in on the weekends.

Last Saturday, I sat through a training session on cat behavior since I’m going to be working with cats soon.

When I came in, I was greeted by the volunteer manager. I could’ve sworn he greeted me with a different name, but I shook it off.

He then asked me to clock in and wait for the cat behavior instructor upstairs.

When the instructor arrived, she told me that I was supposed to arrive 30 minutes earlier and started quizzing me on certain things that I had no knowledge of.

When I told her that I had no idea what she was talking about, she got frustrated, took a deep breath and said, “Avery…what did we go over last week?”

“…I’m not Avery,” I replied.

Apparently there was a huge misunderstanding and we laughed the situation off.

When we explained to the volunteer manager that I wasn’t who he thought I was, he apologized and explained that Avery, another volunteer, and I look very alike.

And I know when the right (Or wrong) person reads this, he or she will accuse, “He basically just said so-and-so-race people look alike. That’s racist!!1”

The way I see it, it’s not.

First off, we had our masks on, so it was difficult enough to see our faces.

Second off, there was no ill intention.

And third, it can be a bit difficult to differentiate two people of the same race when one hasn’t been exposed to them enough.

For example:

To me, it’s very hard to tell white people apart. A lot of times, it seems most of them look the same at first glance. But I know there are certain features to look for to tell them apart, I just don’t know how to do it.

Speaking of people who are alike:

There’s a lot of those in the online business world nowadays.

They have the same marketing funnels, the same video content, the same products, etc.

How can you make yourself stick out?

Well, there are many ways to do so, but one way I can help you is by writing good emails.
