Are the Businesses We All Know and (Maybe) Love Run By Psychopaths?

I recently came across a shocking read.

A study shows that one in five CEOS are psychopaths.

But take those numbers with a grain of salt, because if there’s anything I learned from the past couple of months, it’s that you question everything you read online.

Yes, including scientific studies and research results.

But whether the numbers are one in five or one in 1000, I’m not too surprised at all.

Take a look at a few common signs of a psychopath that I found online:

• Socially irresponsible behavior

• Disregarding or violating the rights of others

• Inability to distinguish between right and wrong

• Difficulty with showing remorse or empathy

• Tendency to lie often

• Manipulating and hurting others

• Recurring problems with the law

• General disregard towards safety and responsibility

Sounds like traits someone would use to describe a stereotypical corporation.

But wait, there’s more.

During the APS Congress, Scott Lilienfeld said:

“Being a psychopath might predispose someone to short-term success. They tend to be charming and flamboyant, which makes it easier to be successful in the short-run….”

Which perfectly describes the story I once told about a business owner working with a psychopathic copywriter.

Long story short:

The business owner found this copywriter on Facebook through one of his value posts and wanted to work with him. He seemed smart, empathetic, kind, and all those other good personality traits you wished in a copywriter. He also had a portfolio full of successful sales letters and had a client history full of reputable businesses.

So he hired the copywriter to write a sales letter for $10,000.

When the work was turned in, it was just a copy-and-pasted sales letter. And when the copywriter was confronted, he broke down crying, wished the business owner good luck, and vanished.

And when the business owner did a little background check, everything in his portfolio was pretty much plagiarized.

Hopefully this information will be helpful in some way, shape, or form.
