An Inside Look Into the Life of Wine Tasters

During pre-COVID times, I’d go on event websites like Meetup and Eventbrite to attend local business networking events.

Once in a while, I’d come across other casual events, wine tasting was one of them that caught my eye, because at the time, I didn’t know that was a thing.

At one point, I did some for-fun research and learned the practice of wine tasting.

Apparently, there’s a whole process wine enthusiasts go through to evaluate the quality of the wine.

Coincidentally enough, I listened to a podcast episode that involved this topic.

This man (We’ll call him Pat) used to work at a bar and went through wine training. And after he completed it, he was immediately assigned to sell wine to people.

Unfortunately, his wine knowledge was still limited, he was only familiar with one kind, but his boss didn’t care.

More often than not, people would come to him and ask for wine recommendations.

One of them something along the lines of,

“I want to try a wine that’s really fruity, has a strong oak-y taste, dry, and has a bitter aftertaste. Any recommendations?”

Pat, who was confused by the request, nodded his head and turned to the collection of wine bottles.

He waited a few moments, picked the only wine bottle he was familiar with, and proceeded to tell his customer that this wine is exactly what they’re looking for and make up a fake story of how the wine was made.

He poured a glass for the customer, she tasted it and was impressed.

If you asked for my opinion on the situation, I’d say that the whole interaction was, for a lack of a better term, full of poop.

However, it does prove the fact that imagery and stories sell.

Maybe that explains why at high end restaurants, the servers take their time explaining the dishes their customers ordered in great detail, and in a really satisfying way too, I might add.

And that’s also a lesson that can be very profitable for you when you implement it in your email marketing efforts.
