A Close Examination Into Cancel Culture

That is going to be the topic for today.

I read a sentence online that was really interesting, which was, “Cancel culture is not real.”

Let’s think about this for a few minutes because it’s possible that there’s possibly some truth in that sentence.

First off, the way it works is that somebody, typically a celebrity or influencer, says or does something their critics don’t like, they bombard them with negativity and criticism, and then they disappear from the face of the world.

Sometimes their critics call them out on an opinion that they don’t agree with.

Sometimes they call them out on something they said or did years ago, which I personally don’t understand.

Sometimes they call them out on something so insignificant, yet the celebrity or influencer still apologizes.

For example,

I remember on Blackout Tuesday, people criticized Emma Watson for posting three black squares on Instagram as opposed to one, and she apologized for it.

Why?

She probably didn’t want to risk getting blacklisted from her industry, which for her, is a real threat.

But it’s a different story when it comes to the online world. Even if people get canceled on one platform, they can always switch to another one.

The most famous example: Donald Trump.

During this presidency, he tweeted like a maniac. But after the incident with the Capitol, Twitter booted him out. He may have been canceled on Twitter, but he still has his email marketing and SMS marketing platform to use to communicate with his supporters.

In reality, he can never truly be canceled unless he’s banned from every single media platform and banned from accessing the Internet, which is extremely unlikely.

So while there’s some truth to the statement of cancel culture not being real, it’s still a real threat for certain people. This example also shows the power of having a platform that you have control over, with email being one of them on that list.

You’re less likely to get deplatformed on email than on social media, it’s a more direct way of contacting your audience, and a lot more profitable too.
