There’s a memory from my days of working in Burger King that I’ve repressed for so long because it was pretty embarrassing.
Well, today I’m going to share this memory with you, so sit back, relax, and enjoy.
When you’re working, no matter where you work, there’s no doubt that you’re going to make mistakes.
But there are certain days where you’re just going to feel off. It’s as if you always feel like you’re one step behind and nothing is going right.
Well, I had one of those days.
I remember there was one moment where I had to grab frozen french fries out of the fridge and pour them into a basket to cook. But when I opened the bag, half of the fries fell on the floor. My co-workers witnessed it, the assistant managers witnessed it, and so did the customers.
Then there was another moment where I had to cook the long chicken patties. I opened the fridge, grabbed the box with one hand, opened it with the other, then the box lost balance and everything dropped on the floor.
To make things worse, both those moments were caught on camera. And the assistant managers thought it was funny to write down the dates and times those moments happened so they can look back on them on the security footage.
But in the end, we all had a good laugh.
So why did I bring this up?
Well one, I thought it’d be a fun story to share.
And two, it touches upon a principle that was taught by a person named Jim Camp, a master negotiator.
The principle being: Be okay with being a little unokay.
Whenever Jim Camp did a sales call, he didn’t care about trying to sound perfect. In fact, he was perfectly comfortable with stuttering here and there, and he didn’t beat himself up for it.
Or when I write emails, sometimes I’d make typos and wouldn’t realize until after they’re sent out.
And doing that is perfectly okay because that’s what makes us human and relatable.
Who cares if someone acts like a grammar police and points out a tiny mistake? It makes no sense for them to focus on one tiny thing and disregard the big picture completely.
